Cents per kWh. Simple average of the settled hourly pool prices, not weighted by usage. Add 0.99¢ for the rate a FLUX variable plan charges.

Reading the chart

What the line is and is not.

It is the wholesale price of electricity in Alberta, set every hour by the Alberta Electric System Operator's power pool. Every variable (also called floating) electricity plan in the province is built on it. The retailer adds its own charge on top.
Each point is the simple average of every hourly pool price in that month, plus FLUX's 0.99¢ per kWh retailer charge. It is the energy charge only. Delivery, rate riders, the daily administration charge, and GST are on top. A real bill is weighted by when the power was used, so it can land a little above or below the monthly average.
No. FLUX Energy began serving customers in 2026. The chart applies today's retailer charge to the market's history, so you can see what a variable plan built like ours follows.
Since January 2000, the highest monthly average pool price was 31.86¢ per kWh in Dec 2022. The lowest was 1.36¢ in Apr 2016.
It depends on the months you are in. Variable has been lower through some stretches and much higher through others, as the chart shows. A fixed rate trades that movement for a known price. Past prices are not an indication of future prices.

Pool prices come from the Alberta Electric System Operator's historical pool price report, averaged by month and updated here as each month settles. FLUX rates are our posted rate card as of the day this page was rendered. To compare against what you pay today, use the savings calculator.
