Tanner founded FLUX Renewables in 2023 to put Alberta roofs to work, and launched FLUX Energy in 2026 to finish the job: retail electricity and natural gas priced in the open, with no exit fees. One family of companies, one mission. Albertans who own their power.
Tanner started on the tools as an electrician in 2005 and went on to earn his Master Electrician certification in 2015, the trade's senior ticket. The work moved the way the trade does: residential, then commercial, then industrial, then solar. He came off the tools in 2020, building someone else's solar company before starting his own. Getting a home connected for microgeneration means working with the wire owners every day, so retail energy was never a pivot for FLUX. It was the rest of the same job.
He built FLUX to be the opposite of how the big retailers sell. Clear pricing, no exit fees on any plan, and no games at renewal.
It started with a little advice from my dad.
There's a shop on the side of the road at my dad's farm. He ran a thriving market out of it for years. He's mostly retired now, but the coolers still come out, potatoes and carrots inside, with a jar for the money. Take what you need, leave what it's worth. He calls them the Karma Koolers, and people pay. Almost all of them. He sets the coolers out the next morning either way.
When we started FLUX Energy, I asked my dad, Peter, to spread the word, and offered him compensation for every customer he brought our way.
Without hesitation he said:
“Give it to them. Not me.”
He's been happy with what he's got for as long as I can remember. It took me about a week to realize he'd handed me the whole program.

- You forget to renew things. Honestly, keep forgetting. When your term ends you just roll onto our current variable rate. No punishment price, no hoping you won't notice.
- You put solar panels on the roof. Your rate should reflect that. SunWise checks which way your meter ran every bill, automatically.
- You'd rather call a Calgary office where a human picks up than press 3 to hear these options again.
- You actually read your bill. We know, rare. Every line on ours can be explained.
We're probably not, if:
- You collect teaser rates. Respect the hustle, but ours are the same on day one as day last, which will bore you senseless. We'd rather earn your tenth year than win your first month.
- You want a five-year lock. Here, staying is a choice, not a clause.
- You're waiting out your current provider's exit fee. Fair. But actually read their terms and conditions, there's a decent chance that fee is a rumour. We'll be here either way.
- You want a retailer who can do something about delivery charges. Nobody can, including us. The poles-and-wires half of your bill is identical with every retailer. We're just the ones who collect it, don't shoot the messenger!
- It's 2am and you need to discuss your gas bill right now. Our Calgary office is asleep. It reopens at 8:30, and a human will actually answer.
